Dill leaves for Meridian and school approaches. This is Scout's first year at school and she is very excited. Jem doesn't want to hang out with Scout at school, saying that grades don't mix. Scout's teacher, Miss Caroline, is very mad with Scout because she can already read. That whole day Miss Caroline has a lot of trouble adjusting to life at Maycomb. With Walter Cunningham, she didn't realize that he was very poor and couldn't pay her back when she offered to pay for his lunch. Scout tried to explain his family, but Miss Caroline didn't want to hear it and patted her with the ruler again.

Scout was being very disrespectful to Walter and his family so she had to have a talk with Calpurnia and she slaps her. Then at school, Burris Ewell was introduced when a cootie appears in the classroom. He has an argument with Miss Caroline and is very rude, then gets up and leaves. The Ewell kids only go to school the first day of they year, they are even poorer than the Cunninghams. When Jem and Scout finally get home, Scout declares that she doesn't want to go to school anymore and has a long conversation with Atticus.
Chapter 11
Mrs Dubose is introduced during chapter 11 for being a cranky old woman who always yells at Jem and Scout as they walk by. One day, she called their father a negroe lover, which pushed Jem to the edge. So later that day, he went and cut the tops off of everyone of her camellias. His punishment was that everyday for a month he had to go to her house and read to her. Scout went along every time. A month after his punishment ended, Mrs. Dubose passed away. She was a morphine addict and it was her goal to get over it before she died. She succeeded in her goal and died happy, she did leave Jem a gift, though. It was a box with one of her camellias in it. This threw Jem into a rage, saying that she even when she is dead, she won't leave him alone.
